Perhaps the first squeaky bum time of the Autumn season for new BBC Content boss Kate Phillips. At 9pm last night an average of 678,000 tuned in to Stranded On Honeymoon Island. That's episode 5 of 12, with the series thankfully all over by next Friday.
This series walks, talks and quacks like something from ITV2; an arranged marriage between Danish format Married at First Sight (22 versions around the world) and Love Island. This hybrid started in Belgium and is on air in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Portugal, Germany, Sweden and Denmark - but not on at peak time in the schedules of the main public service broadcasters.
Clearly it's an attempt to broaden the demographics of BBC1, where the average age of viewers remains over 60 and rising. Davina McCall is 57, but she's really not 'in it' very much; a bit like Richard Hammond voicing over Total WipeOut. From responses on GB News and the Daily Mail, it's seems unlike to fulfil the Reform UK outreach work required by Deborah Turness and Samir Shah. What's it all about, Kate ?
