Jimmy

Congratulations to James Stephenson, of BBC News and Current Affairs, elevated (?) from his current Twitter/X/Linkedin handle of The News Editor, to Executive Editor, Editorial Quality and Standards.

James will  oversee "First and Final Gate processes, ensuring compliance for all our high-risk programmes and journalism."  It's sort of spotting mistakes before you make them; which will come as a change for James, who's been on Newswatch and Feedback more than most, defending, for example, lack of coverage of Telford grooming, at a key point in March 2018. wobbling on climate change in October 2018 and tangling with Nick Cohen over Panorama and Brexit.

James has been with the BBC since 1988. The role of 'News Editor' has always slightly puzzled me; enquiries put the job at somewhere between tilting the news rudder at key times, to simply walking around with a sheaf of papers looking for a meeting...
