Balancing the books

Occasionally, you have to ask where's the money coming from ?

The BBC is today advertising for a Washington Correspondent, Digital. It will be a 'local hire', and thus likely to go to an American citizen, paid $130k+.  The job is to cover "power and politics". "You will primarily write for the BBC News website and app, while also contributing across social media, broadcast and podcasts."

Back home this year, BBC News has cut the jobs of 10 specialist regional editors working for the World Service, and replaced them with 5 generalist 'global affairs' reporters. The Asian Network no longer has a dedicated news operation; Hard Talk has gone.

This new job is billed as working for "BBC News"; it is surely time to ask how much BBC Studios is paying to the public service side of the house to support this lop-sided dash for a fast buck.
