Punter

As if from beyond the grave, mourners at the funeral of former Today programme deputy editor, Alan Ashton were offered two horse racing tips. Alan was the man who introduced the 'service', which ran for 40 years, before ending in June 2024.

Over the Ascot week of 2004, he competed against other tipsters, and came third on a return of £29.75, behind Rob Wright of the Times (+£90) and the joint brains of Garry Richardson and Steve May (+£47.50)

Those final tips, from 28th August: Always A Star came in 3rd in the 5.45 at Southwell, but King Al came home in the 7.30pm at Newbury, with a starting price of 9/1, leading the 11/4 favourite Sir William.
