The combative Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy popped up with the trophy at the British Grand Prix yesterday. She's conscious of photo-opportunities, and presumably approves of the continuing stories of her doubts about the leadership of BBC DG Tim Davie.
This current stand-off is very public; less populist Culture Secretaries have left these disagreements to private phone calls, usually only revealed in memoirs decades later. But Ms Nandy seems to prefer public finger-pointing, in the style of a Wigan Lane lounge bar vendetta. She likes to stay close to home, often working from the trendy wellness-focused Manchester offices of the DCMS, presumably only zooming with her top civil servants.
Can this matter be resolved to the satisfaction of our stylish Culture Secretary without a 'sacking' ? Probably a call now left with BBC Chairman Samir Shah.
I would say Lisa Nandy is a woman not to be underestimated. When Andrew Neil quizzed the prospective successors to Jeremy Corbyn in Jan 2020, she was the only one to stand up to his broadsides and fire back. Keir Starmer spent most of his interview on the ropes.
ReplyDeleteThe BBC wants independence from government influence, quite rightly, but howlers like Glastogate practically invite government to intervene. Why don't BBC staffers understand the Corporation can't broadcast hate speech? It's kinda basic.
