Totting up

BBC DG Tim Davie was in relaxed mode at his old college, Selwyn, in Cambridge last night, even with his English tutor, Jean Chotia (left), in the audience. 

His answers to questions took more byways than the whole of East Anglia, to the discreet annoyance of Roger Mosey, practicing his best Brian Walden. DID we get an answer to the loaded question about BBC News' current treatment of Trump ?

He opened with his inability to exert total control over the output of 23,000 employees. That's an odd figure, given that the annual report puts it at 21,795 including the commercial operations. Ten years ago, the total headcount was 21,404 - and yet, we're always told funding (up until this year) has been cut by 30% in real terms. How does that work ?
