X timed the tweet from President Joe Biden that he was out of the race against Trump at 6.46pm, in a letter of 324 words. 6 minutes later, the end of the BBC1 bulletin managed to say "President Biden has just tweeted that he intends to address the nation later this week, saying it has been a great privilege to serve". Many will have formed the impression this meant a resignation, rather than a decision not to run for a second term.
The situation was clarified at 6.53pm on the News Channel, with a live break in over a pre-recorded programme.
