Notes

Overnight verdict. Really not enough play space for both Clive Myrie and Laura Kuenssberg. Laura, as former News 24 pol corr, much sharper and better at talking in and out of live results.

Clive asked some extraordinary questions, some of which had been posed just before, in a simpler fashion. It was almost as if he wasn't listening. When Angela Rayner said she wasn't counting her chickens, Clive asked what sort of chickens they were. Transitions poorly handled, as with England in Europe; there have to be better ways of turning the corner than musing "Interesting. Also interesting is....".

The result - when Sunak conceded, that was the result. Clive (and presumably the studio) bizarrely still felt Labour had to bank 326 seats.

Vine's swingometer variants merely proved how pointless a swingometer is when you have such wild variants in swings, in several different directions. New tools required.

Too much Mandelson, treated with too much respect. Chris Mason excellent throughout.

  1. I didn’t watch Mandelson but if his appearance ran true to form then lazy journalism would have had him introduced as the mastermind/guru behind the 1997 Blair win. In reality it only needs a glimpse at the polling from 1994 to see John Smith’s Labour was soaring ahead of the Tories who were, like today, in free fall. Mandelson & Blair inherited a winning side but the pretence about his election winning abilities persist. As does the silence over his friendships with oligarchs and paedophiles.
