And another thing

The England football team came home to the UK yesterday. It might just have been a news story if they'd stayed away, or sold themselves en masse to Saudi.

So there were BBC1 national bulletin features. But how many of you around the UK were given 'local hero' coverage as well?  In the South East, as national journalists mused bootlessly over Southgate's future, we were given our  own version, with some of the same clips, because Gareth is 'Crawley's Own'.  And a feature plus live on 'Gravesend's Own' Marc Guehi. Apparently Marc was a lovely boy, still keeps in touch with his sports teacher, and is an inspiration, in both sporting and lifestyle matter, to young pupils at his old school. Now that's news.

  1. Aw, Bill. You've got to allow local journalism a bit of leeway when they've got a story about a famous boy on their patch. Trouble is, this time it was combined with sport journalism, in which sportsmen and women are regularly asked how they feel about winning/losing/breaking their pelvis, or whether the arrest & detention of their star striker might affect their chances of defeating United tonight.
