A former Mr Fern Britton has turned up as chair of the Ofcom Content Board.
Sir Clive Jones, CBE, 75 (Newbridge Grammar and BSc Economics and International Relations, LSE) was born in Pontllanfraith, Gwent. His first job was as a trainee with the Yorkshire Post. In 1978 he moved to become news editor for Yorkshire TV's nightly Calendar. From there his career progressed via executive positions with TV-am (working with Greg Dyke and Roland Rat), TV South, London News Network, Central TV and Carlton TV (as David Cameron's boss) until, with the merger of Granada TV – the final consolidation of the independent franchises – he became CEO of the newly formed ITV News Group Ltd in 2004.
In 2007 he started a new life as a serial non-exec and charity chair.
Clive and Fern met when Fern was presenting Coast to Coast in Southampton, in 1986. Britton broke off their affair after a year but Jones turned up on her doorstep two days later, after leaving his wife for her. They had twins, and then a third child, but effectively broke up well before a formal divorce in 2000. Fern has recently claimed she passed a Mensa test, when Clive didn't.
His third wife is Dame Vikki Heywood, former executive director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, then chair of the RSA until 2018.
