The switch-back ownership of Britbox continues, as BBC Studios suddenly find £255m down the back of a sofa and buy out ITV's 50% share of the original Britbox International version. In March 2022, ITV bought the BBC's 10% share in Britbox UK.
Is Britbox International worth over £500m ? In December, it claimed 3.4 million subscribers across eight territories – the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. That was a 15% increase in a year.
Rebecca Glashow, BBC Studios Global Media & Streaming CEO said: “I am thrilled to further our involvement in BritBox International – it’s a profitable business and a winning proposition. We see tremendous opportunity to grow this unique service and take it to even greater heights for its subscribers, with the full power of the BBC behind it.”
The deal means a transfer of power from current London-based CEO Reemah Sakaan; betcha the new HQ is in New York.
