Towering

£275m for the BT Tower ?  Looks like a bargain.  Cost £2.5m to build in 1965 - £400m at today's prices. And it's not just a question of working out how many kingsize suites you can get in the narrow tower floors (answer: probably no more than 60). There's plenty of opportunity for development around the base. You wouldn't be surprised if MCR/Heatherwick sold some bits on, to further fund the project.

  1. I'd always understood that there are no floors between BT Tower's base building and the top few floors of restaurant etc. The "windows" up the main shaft are dummies affixed to the central concrete column that contains only the lift shaft and emergency stairs.

  2. As I understand it, the core is indeed two lifts, emergency stairs and a large cable riser. But at least in the early days floors 11-23 carried equipment, bays, etc, maintained by a team of eight engineers, with a repair floor. And they could see out of some windows.
