Not worth it

There ought to be alarm bells ringing at Broadcasting House, as pioneer radio indie Somethin' Else decides to 'hand back' contracts to produce a number of BBC radio shows.

Somethin' Else was founded in 1991 by Jez Nelson, and one of its first productions was with Gilles Peterson, currently broadcast on 6Music. At one stage Somethin' Else was the BBC's biggest indpendent provider to network. It was taken over by Sony Music in 2021, and now, it seems, has found some current commissions are not worth continuing with. Already the Gilles Peterson show is back out to tender, as are Radio 2 shows with Trevor Nelson, Angela Griffin and Fearne Cotton.

Somethin' Else also makes Gardener's Question Time and The Kitchen Cabinet for Radio 4; it seems they're still worth doing.
