Former BBC DG Mark Thompson has formally started at CNN, and delivered a video message to 4,000 employees.

TV, he told them, is "one platform in a growing number of platforms" but it "can no longer define us". 

“We have some real talent and bright creative spots on the digital side, but despite all the hard work, our digital products today lag well behind the current state of the art."

Unlike his time at the New York Times, where he's said to have stayed out of matters editorial, the new CNN chief took park in Monday morning's editors call, and urged for coverage to help viewers and readers to understand what Hamas is, who they are, and what their goals were. 

• CNN's US TV audience fell by 35% in 2022; in the States, it's web ranking seems to be on a par with the New York Times. bbc.com and bbc.co.uk are ahead when combined, but remember, they're much wide than just news in their offering.
