As if to confirm that the commercial dog is wagging the public service tail, BBC News Digital Director Naja Neilsen has written an internal memo to staff today, thus
"It is fantastic to be able to share the news that today we are launching the public beta of the new BBC.com in North America.
"This marks a really meaningful change in how we will serve audiences, first in North America and then beyond (ex-UK). Led by BBC Studios, the public beta is a testament to the BBC’s capabilities as we continue to build a digital-first BBC News providing value to all audiences. It also represents a pivotal moment for how we serve our audiences outside the UK with our world-class digital journalism – which will be presented alongside the best of the rest of the BBC in a new, redesigned, and personalised web platform."
“Public beta is an exciting preview of what’s to come as we continue on our journey in becoming a digitally led global media organization.....
"Alongside this, BBC Studios are leading on a plan to launch a new app for our international audiences in the new year. This will replace the news app outside the UK. To allow News to move to new production systems, from October we will be offering an interim version of the app to our international users which will include a new content layout and explore tab highlighting the most visited topics, but will also update to remove the MyNews function from the app."
If it's all so groovy, why don't UK licence fee payers get it too ? Or are licence fees just to be used up to supply core content to bbc.com ?
