Holding position

This post may be redundant soon, but here goes.

Richard Sharp seems to be leaving it to a court of public opinion as to whether he should resign as BBC Chairman. His strategy seems to be "I'm doing a good job, and if there is criticism of my appointment process from a barrister then it's marginal".

"It's a tricky world, this public service stuff, and as a man making my way in this area, I did my best to check that everything was tickety-boo on the old conflict of interest stuff, and I'm sorry if I misjudged it. But now the BBC loves me and I love them, so let me get on with saving it".

Unfortunately, this is not some lost and lonely soul, but a hard-nosed investment banker with a high opinion of his own talents, a love of luxury, caught in showbiz headlights. So caught that he can't see what everyone else can - he was put into the job by Boris Johnson, and his part, however small, in directing the former Prime Minister to financial salvation, needed to be disclosed, and he knows it. The job of BBC Chairman requires fine judgement, which demonstrably he lacked in getting the post.
