Former BBC Director of News and Radio Helen Boaden gave Rhodri Talfan Davies a decent roughing up at the Voice of the Listener and Viewer conference last week.
She described a BBC less willing to listen directly to the audience around the UK than during her time; she said governance by non-executives had reduced accountability to audiences; she cited the bad call of closing and re-opening BBC3; she accused the current DG and Chairman of having a blind gung-ho approach to commercialisation; she decried the Americanisation of BBC Natural History output after the commercial deal with Discovery; she was alarmed at rumours of sending radio speech in general and current affairs in particular to Studios, to make more money from podcasts tilted at the USA; she described listening to many podcasts, even from the BBC, as 'like wading around in treacle'; and she said there was a strong rumour that an Orchestra will be shifted to Studios.
