The death of Richard Wade, who was titled Head of Radio 4 in the 1980s, got me hunting for pictures. He was brought in to Radio 4 by Monica Sims, Controller Radio 4. General network toilers rather resented the idea that the station needed both, and more, that both came from telly.
I was working on attachment to Current Affairs Magazine Programmes (yes, CAMP) in 1982, producing Midweek. We had an instruction to go to Plymouth in front of a live audience. So I asked the Royal Marines to drum up a stunt to get some pre-publicity, and, lo and behold, the local tv news, Spotlight, deemed it worth filming, with a young Fern Britton. Sims and Wade were also in Plymouth but we never saw them.
