There will be a couple of important criteria for selecting the next quizmaster for University Challenge - the ability to get tricky names and complex questions out as if you vaguely understand them. The bane of the production team ? Dropping in second attempts, after presenter mispronunciations.
Mr Paxman's anxiety with science questions is palpable; but then, dear reader, you take an unprepared run at, say, roentgenium, myrmekiaphila neilyoungi, marjorana fermion, etc. He reads the questions from cue cards all printed in capital letters; if he likes you, he'll sign your toughest after the match.
In recent years, the bonus questions have often had an added parameter: "Three bonuses on expressions whose two words are spanned by the names of a Greek letter...." "Three bonus questions on pairs of words whose spelling differs by the substitution of a 'double-o' for a 'single-o' in the middle...." "Three bonus questions on words that can be made from the letters of the word 'broccoli'....."
This coming season, the music and picture questions are being prepped by two newly-recruited researchers. Good luck to them all.
