VAT to fund French PSB

Emmanuel Macron is moving forward with his plan to end the French equivalent of the licence fee (la contribution pour l’audiovisuel public) and replace it with a slice of VAT returns.

The current annual fee is €138 (just over £116 today), and is forecast to raise €3.2bn (£2.7bn) in 2022; it pays for France Télévisions (five national channels and more regional services) Radio France, Arte, and international media such as France 24 and RFI, and gives employment to around 110,000.

The bill was passed in the National Assembly over the weekend with 170 French MPs in favour and 57 opposed. The proposal is to ringfence €3.7bn from VAT receipts. It still needs to pass the Senate.
