The BBC's Director General has always been the Editor-in-chief, but Tim Davie's current style is making it difficult for the next Director of New and Current Affairs. Tim likes everyone to think he's an open-plan, open-minded, open-door sort of guy, with sparkly trainers in the week, and muddy ones at weekends. It flatters his own sense of dynamism to think he's making all the big calls - and frankly, his PR minders are letting that happen.
It looks like he was involved in the havering over the appointment of Jess Brammar, the twitching over Marcus Ryder (and has let it be known he's ready to talk), and now we learn he's had a 'construction conversation' with Andrew Neil. How many other big players have been swerving Fran Unsworth, outgoing boss of News, in the past year, for a talk with Tim ?
