The country's new top civil servant, Simon Case, was styled as 'Dr' in Court Circulars when managing the public affairs of the Cambridges. He has a Ph D from Queen Mary College, London, where his thesis, on the The Joint Intelligence Committee And The German Question 1947-1961 was supervised by Professor Peter Hennessey. His conclusion - that, through this tense period of the Cold War, the JIC established itself as the interface between intelligence and policy.
It wasn't all work and no play for Simon in securing his first degree, in History, from Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a leading member of the college boat club, The First and Third, and had a tricky time with the college boat competing in the Thames Head of the River races, when the whole crew had to sleep on the floor of an ex-girlfriend.
Did he find love on the river ? Simon rowed in the University Lightweight (by avoirdupois rather than intellectual prowess) Eight, and lost to Oxford. Liz Kistruck was at Jesus, enjoying the study of fluid mechanics, and her Women's Eight vanquished the Dark Blues. The couple married in 2007. She turned to the study of accounts, and is now Senior Vice President of Global Marketing Analytics at Expedia.
