Taking the register

"Friends" of Tim Davie have floated the idea of a new form of control on the external activities of BBC presenters, particularly in News; perhaps a register of their earnings outside the organisation, free for all to scrutinise.

It needs more thought, then dropping. Why would Andrew Neil ever front a News & Current Affairs show, and declare his earnings from The Spectator ?  Why would Kirsty Wark share her earnings from her production company Two Rivers Media ?  Why would Jeremy Vine tell you what he earns from Channel 5 ?  Unless, presumably, you want to end their BBC contracts.

There might be some pleasure in reading how much, or indeed how little, BBC hacks earn from The World of Books.  Today's Special Correspondent, James Naughtie, BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson, BBC North America Editor, Jon Sopel, BBC News thought leader Kamal Ahmed, BBC News presenter George Alagiah, BBC Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis - a league table of earnings would be a hoot.
