The Telegraph, which now barely tries to conceal that it's just a cover for #defundtheBBC, offers the opinion of staff-based cultural columnist Ben Lawrence: "The BBC should retire 'yoof' station Radio 1 and put the money elsewhere...It's time to put it out of its misery"
It comes as Ofcom publishes its 2020 survey of UK news consumption, completed just before lockdown. 42% of the population use radio for news, and 21% of that total turn to Radio 1 (that's just ahead of Radio 4, at 20%). Within those Radio 1 figures, 48% of them are aged 16-24, and 41% come from an ethnic minority.
For comparison, 35% of UK adults use newspapers to get their info, and within that 35%, 12% turn to The Telegraph. Breaking it down further 17% are 16-24 and 17% are from an ethnic minority.
