Lord Hall has opened the 2020 Big Covid-Special Register of BBC Staff Wishing to Be Considered for Voluntary Redundancy. Public service employees (what will BBC Studios do ?) have six weeks to consider the offer, with, as usual, no guarantee that any particular request will be accepted.
As well as the target of 450 job cuts in News, the financial gap must be widening. BBC Studios is not returning a profit to the business for 2019/20, but the current year looks just as tricky, and the forecast £125m shortfall is only heading upwards; watch what the BBC Board does about Over-75 tv licences at their July meeting.
1,200 staff in language services, funded by FCO grants, must also be hoping for some longer term clarity from the Government, with their careers only being extended in six month tranches.
