Will the BBC come back as a simpler organisation after the epidemic dies down ? How did the broadcasting behemoth stay on air, largely unchanged as far as most audiences were concerned, with 92% of its staff working from home ?
The man charged with DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT is Rhodri Talfan Davies, ironically the beneficiary of the most recent BBC property investment, the new Cardiff HQ. The Director of BBC Wales/Cymru lives in Bristol - and has told staff he's saved around 12 hours commuting a week. "It's like having an extra day in the week". Mmm - is that a working day, or a day off, Rhodri ?
Rhodri has spotted that the crisis removed some roadblocks to change, with, for the BBC, relatively quick decisions needed, and made at the start of the epidemic. (Insiders say some of the roadblocks came back pretty quickly too, with overlapping daily Zoom meetings at Gold, Silver and Bronze levels). But Rhodri's project is already pretty old school - he's trawling email suggestions and setting up teams to look at the various issues. Heritage Work Practices are us !
