Government tracking

It was good each way bet that yesterday's UK covid-19 death toll ('all settings') would breach the 30k mark. I wonder at what stage the No 10 communications team decided to offer the Downing Street daily briefing to questions from local and regional papers.

"Now we can see here the daily tests and these have increased over time and this is up to the 6th May - but I will, er, move on"  Public Health England's medical director Professor Yvonne Doyle yesterday demonstrating detailed data analysis skills acquired through at least 18 years in UK public health roles.

BBC News got a little bolder at 10pm last night. Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg talked about the Government "repeatedly missing testing targets". Huw Edwards said "For the fourth day the Government missed its daily target of 100,000 tests, which was hit once last Friday and even that measure was disputed by some experts".  The bulletin didn't find time for the line from The Telegraph, filed at 9pm, that the shipment of hospital gowns from Turkey, which was given special  coverage by BBC Newsgathering last month, was 'useless'.

How long will the Government be allowed to say that there aren't proper comparative statistics about excess deaths, when the FT have been compiling detailed graphs since April 26th ? If the FT can do it, why can't the BBC ?
