The BBC still hasn't got its extensive guidelines right on presenters and outside work. Too much discretion is left in the hands of senior managers, and more and more seems to be coming out to bite Auntie on the bum.
Someone will have sanctioned Mishal Husain chairing meetings for the behind-closed-doors Oslo Energy Forum at the Grand Hotel. Whilst its topic of 'transition' and 'climate change' may have been entirely benign, the not-for-profit charity running the event is almost entirely funded by North Sea oil and gas money. Perhaps more uncomfortable is the news that Radio 1's Greg James has been fronting a series of online shows for Shell, called The Great Travel Hack. They feature celebs driving 'eco-friendly' cars in 'road challenges'. On their website, Greg helpfully explains: "It’s a great idea for a show and anything which opens up the conversation into cleaner travel can only be a good thing. It’s important to have big energy companies involved and for them to instigate change."
Those with long memories may recall that over nine years in the 1980s, Brian Redhead presented a quarterly in-house video for BP staff.
