Not long now

BBC News hacks have been invited to a meeting next Wednesday described as an update on the rather elusive BBC News strategy.

It seems to have acquired a new tag - "distinctive, trusted, engaging everyone, every day", presumably penned by thought-leader and book-festival darling Kamal Ahmed.

Cynics are confident this is cover for the inevitable announcement of piecemeal yet chunky salami slicing, that leaves totemic output close to the heart of departing DG Lord Hall unscathed.

Let's be clear. A new DG will have to oversee a move to fewer linear TV and radio channels - a really strategic re-think of world, national, regional and local news should be a driving component of that process. News seems as complacent as Lord Hall.
