A new survey from Midia Research has attracted the eyeballs of BBC Radio and Education Director, James Purnell. Midia's analysis: "BBC Sounds is the second-most widely used single platform [behind Spotify] in the UK – a testament to the BBC’s sometimes controversial Sounds strategy."

James rightly wants more details. Here's some. It's the second quarter of the survey, using data from a rolling survey of 4,000 weighted respondents, conducted by Kantar in the UK, UK, Canada and Australia. Within that 4,000 there are 576 podcast users. It's not stated how many are in the UK. They only started asking podcast questions in Q3 2019 - I can't find that survey.

Here's the question the survey asks:

Q10               Base = podcast users
Where do you normally access your podcasts (select all that apply)
a   Apple podcast app
b   Apple Music
c   Google Podcasts
d   Spotify
e   ACAST
f    Luminary
g   Downcast
h   Overcast
i    Stitcher
j    BBC Sounds (field in UK only)
j    NPR (field in US Only)
j    CBC (field in CA only)

Perhaps Mr Purnell will soon share more of the data the BBC has mined from signed-in users of Sounds, properly baselined against the old Radio iPlayer.
