The next DG will (hopefully) see in the centenary, set the course for the next century, negotiate the terms of relationship with government. Arguably it should be an outsider. There will be a lot of pressure to appoint a woman. Fortunately for the BBC good candidates abound.— Ben Fenton (@benfenton) January 20, 2020
Abound ? Former BBC News boss James Harding ruled himself out this morning. Former BBC News boss Roger Mosey seems also to have ruled himself out in the New Statesman (en passant piquantly describing Tony Hall's regime as 'amiable').
We've had mentions for Tim Davie, James Purnell, Charlotte Moore, Fran Unsworth, Kamal Ahmed, Fiona Campbell and Sarah Sands. I've not yet heard a peep from the Bob Shennan camp (or is it just a tent ?). Externally, we're pointed to Alex Mahon, Dame Carolyn McCall, Lional Barbder, Jay Hunt, Anne Bulford and Helen Boaden.
In my Midweek glory days, a very senior producer had a list of 200 potential presenters of the show, matched with 200 reasons why they couldn't/shouldn't do it. The length of a list doesn't necessarily equal abundance.
None the less, the 2020 DG Stakes will happily feature heavily in this blog. I haven't got the personnel to set up a separate site, so we'll navigate by numbers. The 2012 DG Stakes, re-badged "How George Did It" is still sitting in the ether, here.
