How they will come for the BBC...

1) The appointment of an acquiescent Culture Secretary

2) Moving non-payment of licence fee from criminal to civil jurisdiction; the BBC estimates first year loss at £200m. Could well be more cumulatively, as flouting gathers strength.

3) No support for BBC attempts to collect licence fees from Over-75s who are not on Pension Credit, starting 1 June 2020.  Currently there are around 4.6m households where over-75s get free tv licences; 2.5m people are on Pension Credit. BBC could lose another £200m.

4) Once the Ofcom review of News and Current Affairs is put (due "Autumn 2019"), the appointment of an 'independent' committee to look at on future funding of public sector broadcasting, to report before the mid-term Charter review, expected in 2022. "This review is not a full Charter Review and so will not look at the BBC’s mission, purpose or the method by which it is funded." Hmm. Tell that to Dominic Cummings....

5) The BBC will be invited to propose a reduced list of core services, which might be paid for via taxation to allotted to a new Public Service Broadcasting Fund. The Government will propose that BBC Studios be turned into a private limited company, competing for streaming subscriptions on the open market.

By the New Year, more than 50% of UK households will be paying for an SVOD service - the vast bulk of them signed up to Netflix and Amazon. Marvel at what happens to UK education as the first generation brought up on US TV and YouTube moves through our schools.....
