The re-designed space in front of Television Centre is now officially award-winning.
The unloved horseshoe car park, filled with withered supermarket shrubs, and snakes of punters queuing for studio shows in the rain, was bounded by high fences, with security gates reminiscent of Berlin checkpoints. Senior executives used to amuse themselves by taking potshots from upper windows with air rifles, aiming at unsuspecting security guards.
Now the redesigned piazza, by Gillespies, has been named landscape architecture project at the 2019 AJ Architecture Awards
‘There’s a completeness about it,’ said one judge. ‘The team has managed to create very successful links across the site using the landscape'.
