Ray on pay

Ray Snoddy has taken advantage of his freelance status by writing for Broadcast (paywalled) on the case of Samira Ahmed v The BBC.  Ray was the first presenter of Newswatch, from 2004 to 2013.

“Is the BBC saying that a serious trained journalist of either sex doing a difficult job is worth six or seven times less than someone who can sprinkle a little entertainment over their profile?

“Samira may not be entitled to £693,245 but the gap between £3,000 and £440 separating two qualified professionals is too great and the employment tribunal should award her compensation.”

Ray also backs up Samira's claim that some News bosses don't like it up 'em. "After interviewing one, now former, senior BBC news executive, my Newswatch editor was told it might be a good idea to find a new presenter because the questioning had been too aggressive."

Will Ray also be looking for back pay ? "Very tempting, but probably not."
