To a pattern

C4's head of news and current affairs Dorothy Byrne has returned to an old simile in her McTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival. In 2007 she said of the Today programme "It's as if you're walking down the street and you enter a shop and it's full of old people knitting. That's the feeling I have when I listen to it, like I'm in the wrong building."

Last night, she added some geography: listening to Today was like "accidentally walking into a knitting shop in Bournemouth".

This morning Dorothy faced the weary wrath and swooping tones of Justin Webb. She quipped "I'm sure you're all wearing very nice jumpers". Asked to focus her criticism, she said the programme sounded metropolitan and middle class, and needed to get out more. Then she was monstered by Justin Webb, John Humphrys, friend-of-the-programme David Davis, and the UK's most-woke male Garry Richardson. Which sort of proved her point.

One of the most popular knitting shops in Bournemouth is Carly's Crafts, sited pleasingly at No 2 Cardigan Road, run by Michele Kennedy. I expect to hear her in the 0810 slot tomorrow.
