Can I cock one small eyebrow at the instant re-commissioning of Gentleman Jack on BBC1 ? The first episode of series one returned an average of 5.1m viewers. which is (read carefully) "the most successful launch for a new BBC drama this year".
I have a small bet, which I'm happy to lose, that the figure will fall as the series progresses. Co-producers HBO have been running Gentleman Jack in the States since April 22. The first four episodes have averaged 400,000 viewers. The New York Times says "this nimble series ...both offers an engrossing 19th-century comedy of social mores and upends (as they didn’t say in 1832) the heteronormative assumptions of such stories."
