So, farewell to Radio 5Live for John Inverdale (Clifton College, Bristol and Southampton University), signing off at Cheltenham, just before the station's 25th birthday.
John was a feature of the first variant of Radio 5 - with John Inverdale's Drive In running from 4pm til 6pm on the station that tried to mix sport, children's, and magazine shows. He moved seemlessly to Inverdale Nationwide, from 4pm to 6pm on the all-new news and sport mix, which made perfect sense - and stayed in the slot til 1997, picking up Sony Broadcaster of the Year in that last year.
Always confident at the microphone, John's career has not been without the odd verbal gaffe. Critic Matthew Norman, not a big fan, described him as "ridiculously talented".
