A sharp-eyed reader has spotted something of the shape of things to come for Friday Night Is Music Night on Radio 2. It was the Sunday Times that noted the BBC Concert Orchestra would be featuring less often. It was the Sunday Times Culture section that carries an ad for a series of concerts billed as Friday Night Is Music Night Live, bearing the Radio 2 logo, touring UK theatres in May and October.
The live shows feature the Leo Green Orchestra, which presumably requires a smaller bus than the concert orchestra. The repertoire is billed as '60s'. I imagine the re-invention of Radio 2 requires fewer selections from The Merry Widow, and renditions of Coronation Scot. Still, perhaps we should be grateful for an oasis of 60s nostalgia in a station with a regimented playlist of current hits and 80s oldies.
