Jonathan Dimbleby (Charterhouse, The Royal Agricultural College and University College London) is stepping down from R4's Any Questions in the summer, as he approaches his 75th birthday.
This will at least give the interview panel for the new Controller of Radio 4 a tie-breaker question about a replacement, given that John Humphrys' duties at Today are to be spread amongst existing presenters and regular holiday relief extras.
Mr Dimbley has been doing the job for 32 years. His first show included The Rt Hon Norman Tebbit, MP, The Rt Hon Roy Hattersley, MP, Des Wilson, President, Liberal Party and Lady Antonia Fraser. All, remarkably, still with us, as is producer Carole Stone.
"I obviously looked so nervous ahead of my first programme that as we went on stage, Roy patted me on the shoulder and said 'don't worry, it will be alright'," says Dimbleby. He's the fourth presenter of AQ, and by far the longest-serving.
