News from behind the sofa

Crikey. Moving Dr Who to Sunday night certainly paid off for Charlotte Moore and her scheduling team. The first of the Jodie Whittaker outings was watched by an average of 8.2m - that's 40.1% of the available viewing audience.

Of course, it's the average ratings over a series that count. You have to go back to 2008, and David Tennant, to find an average of 8m. Peter Capaldi's tenure averaged just 5.5m.

Some of the 8.2m might have been because the first episode was four to five minutes longer than its allotted slot - so some might have been arriving for the Strictly Results show - which averaged 9m, with a 40.5% share. But it's still a remarkable figure.
