The theme for Hill Street Blues wasn't written until after the whole of Series 1 was in the can. Steve Bochco turned to Mike Post, already a veteran of tv composition. His first breakthrough was at 23, winning a Grammy for Best Musical Arrangement for Mason Williams' 'Classical Gas'. He went on to write opening music for The Rockford Files, LA Law, NYPD Blue and The A-team.
The Hill Street Blues' theme was released as a single in 1981, featuring Larry Carlton on guitar. It reached No 10 in the Billboard charts, and won a Grammy for best instrumental.
