Cambridge from a distance

Things are not entirely sorted between the BBC and Ofcom. Sharon White's speech to the RTS meeting in Cambridge was hard listening for BBC types, especially on diversity "“The BBC is the UK’s national broadcaster. Whatever the BBC does has a huge impact on the rest of the industry. We would want the BBC to lead the way rather than be in the middle of the pack.”

There was also enough in the first big speech by new BBC Chairman Sir David Clementi to suggest that Ofcom's forthcoming operating licences may have wrinkles that will leave Auntie frowning; and to suggest that the promised secrecy about talent pay in BBC Studios is under genuine threat from Culture Secretary Karen Bradley and pocket rocket Damian Collins, at the DCMS Select Committee.

Meanwhile, I have readers who will be intrigued by this snippet from Sir David: "Later this year, we will also present plans for enhancing our local radio services - celebrating their 50th anniversary."

  1. Sharon doesn't want the Beeb to be "middle of the pack" or "middle class".
