If the BBC's Director of Music Bob Shennan thought he was close to finding the magic formula to bring pop music back to prime-time BBC1, the second annual BBC Music Awards failed to provide an answer.
It returned an average of 2.5m viewers over two hours in the overnight ratings - a share of 12.8%, down from 3.9m (18.3%) last year. Masterchef: The Professionals did better on BBC2, with 2.75m. Only two of the five award winners were available to perform. Two writers were credited with supplying the script. Three graphic design companies were credited. It ended with Rod Stewart and three sturdy girls singing "Sailing", originally recorded forty years ago.
The show, "supported by Birmingham City Council", was at the Genting (formerly NEC) Arena. Where next ? Why ?
