The Culture Secretary will re-announce today that the Government wants to review enforcement of the payment of the tv licence fee, saying 10% of cases brought to magistrates courts involve defaulters. It's not
new news - backbenchers prodded for this in March, with behind the scenes support from Justice ministers. But it is dangerous stuff. 10% of cases only represents 0.3% of court time; utilities tend to avoid court action - but then, they can actually cut people off. And, if Sajid Javid and his team haven't got a real idea of an alternative, who knows where we might end up...
Sajid at least has an afternoon slot at today's RTS Conference; morning sessions will be disrupted by the appearance of Rona Fairhead in front of the Culture Select Committee, with delegates trying to find shady places on the King's Place terrace to watch on smart-phones. I confidently predict a wifi crash around 1030am...
- Still puzzled as to why the Home Affairs Select Committee put a password on the police transcripts of contacts with the BBC over the Sir Cliff search - and then printed the password with it. HASC1234
