In the States, the website Politico thinks it has tracked down the apartment bought by New York Times CEO Mark Thompson for a reported $3.4m. The pad is certainly in the Cornwall Building on the Upper West Side, and, to this humble long-distance viewer, it's not too shabby. Certainly not a "dilapidated castle".
Should Thommo wish to rip out the kitchen, he can console himself in the groundfloor City Diner during the renovations. It has a menu only New Yorkers seem to expect - at least in length...
