Think of a number

FoI factoids

As at 30 September 2013, the BBC employed 19,649 staff on permanent or fixed-term contracts. Of this number, 38% were employed in the News division, which includes Global News and World Service.

Please note that, as set out in section 6(1)(b)(ii) of the FOI Act, our subsidiaries (including BBC Studios & Post Production Ltd, UKTV, BBC Global News Ltd and BBC Worldwide Ltd), as well as the charities BBC Media Action and BBC Children in Need, are not subject to the Act; therefore information for their personnel is not included in the figures quoted above.

14.1% of the Public Service Broadcasting income is spent on the News division, including staff and production costs. Please note, due to the way this information is held, this figure excludes Global News and World Service.

Doing the maths for you, 7,466.22 work in BBC News. Down by 16% from the estimated 9,000 when the division was brought together under Helen Boaden. One more body coming next week, as James Harding appoints a Managing Editor - a new post, tipped to go to an outsider.

  • The police service in Scotland has a staff of 7,500, as does the London Underground, Legal & General UK, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and defence company Thales UK.
