
Never mind passing off horse as beef - in the United States, nearly 40 % of fish sold is not what the label or menu says.
The samples taken nationwide by Oceana found, for example, that 95% of the sushi restaurants they visited mislabelled something, most often snapper - which turned out to be anything from rockfish to tilapia and tilefish. In the New York area, 95% of fish sold as "white tuna" turned out to be snake mackerel or escolar - often guilty of causing a dodgy tummy. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, fish biologists call escolar the "ex-lax fish".
