So, if we read the hints from Lord Patten right, he wants a new DG, supported by two lieutenants - a creative head and an editorial head.
And he hopes to get a new DG in weeks. Whilst the Good Lord makes protestations of not wishing to grandstand, he'll take a view of all three appointments. He'll want at least one to come from outside the organisation - and he'll be desperate that at least one is a woman.
Meanwhile, in stressing the honourability of George Entwistle's resignation decision, he must hope that there are resignations down the chain - or Tim Davie will face a very unpleasant first working day as acting BBC DG.
