Rehearsing the arguments

The BBC1 digital schedules (as at 1745 Sunday) remain unchanged. Monday's Panorama is still billed as an exploration of gambling's popularity "and reveals a darker side".

Dark could move into full Jacobean tragedy if Panorama's special on Newsnight goes ahead. Friends of friends of the slighted have had their say in the Sunday papers, and now what hits the transmitter is down to the editorial judgement of Tom Giles at Panorama, Peter Horrocks (playing the part of Director of News Helen Boaden) and Tim Davie (playing the part of Director General George Entwistle).

I'm alarmed by two things. One - that it might be an hour long, and two, that it includes the views of Kevin Marsh. No aspersion intended on Kevin's intelligence here, but he's not "a player" in my preferred list of dramatis personae...and if he's included, then it risks being a run round the issues, rather than revelatory. We now know that Savile was a paedophile; we don't need to take much time to re-establish that. If Panorama doesn't feature Entwistle, Boaden and Rippon, it's relying on one side and emails to judge the suppression-cos-it-was-uncomfortable allegation - and probably can't be conclusive.

Peter Horrocks, editor of Newsnight from 1994-1997, and Panorama 1997-2000, will be pivotal in the final call.
