Playing percentages

I was taken with the news that led the Today Programme on Friday, that the base entry requirements for teachers are to be raised - all will now require a B in GCSE maths and English, as opposed to a C previously, before they can enter teacher training.

I happened to be staying with One of the Pre-Eminent Maths Teachers of Her Generation, and asked what the difference really meant - was it one of those narrow borderlines that caused the recent row over re-grading?  She said you needed to get 20% of the available marks for a C, and 40% for B. So, in one sense it's a massive rise - 100% by my calculation. In another sense, you can still be a teacher and get 60% of maths WRONG.
